What Is The Difference Between A Psychologist And A Psychotherapist?
- A psychologist:
has a doctorate degree in psychology, the study of human development, learning, and behavior
is trained in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental illness, emotional disorders, and behavioral problems
uses a variety of theoretical orientations such as CBT, mindfulness, and psychodynamic therapy to help people understand the nature of difficulties they may be dealing with, develop insight and skills to minimize and manage the impact of their problems
are the only professionals specifically trained and qualified in the development, research, and administration of specialized psychological tests used to assess elements of intelligence or achievement, personality characteristics, mental and emotional disorders
The term “psychologist” is a protected and privileged term in Canada and the US. Only members of a local regulatory body, such as L’Ordre des psychologue du Quebec (OPQ) and the College of Psychologists of Ontario (CPO), may call themselves psychologists
- A psychotherapist:
is a professional who specifically provides talk therapy for the purpose of treating mental health disorders
can have training from any mental health related fields such as counselling, psychology, social work, and nursing
when it comes to the treatment of mental health disorders, the roles of psychologists and psychotherapists overlap, but, in general, the services psychologists offer go beyond just psychotherapy
psychotherapists are not trained in assessment or diagnosis
What Are Your Payment Methods?
How Long Is A Session?
Do You Accept Insurance?
Yes. Make sure your insurance policy covers you. Typically, you will provide your insurer with a receipt of your session’s payment, and they will reimburse you.
Do I Have To Go In With My Child?
If the session is intended for your child, it is recommended that you be present for the first session as the therapist usually will meet with you first for parts or entire part of the first session. Otherwise, no.
