Who is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a mental health professional who holds a masters and/or a doctoral degree and has been trained to assess, diagnose, and treat mental health problems. Psychologists in Quebec must be members of the Ordre des Psychologues du Québec whereas psychologists in Ontario must be members of the College of Psychologists of Ontario; they are licensed to work in their areas of competency. Psychologists are experts in providing scientific explanations of how people think, feel, or behave and apply their knowledge to help individuals modify their thought patterns, feelings, and behaviors.

When do I need to see a psychologist?

As human beings, we regularly experience stress, anxiety, sadness, jealousy, excitement, anger, and many more emotions. We may have felt overwhelmed at school or at work or simply by household responsibilities. Along the way, we may develop strategies to deal with these feelings. Some of these strategies may not be perfectly adaptive to our lifestyle. If you feel that you have a hard time controlling your emotions, dealing with your feelings, managing your time, maintaining your relationship, and if you have developed unhealthy patterns of behaviors or thinking that is upsetting yourself, your loved ones, and people around you, then it is the time to see a psychologist.

How are the psychological services paid?

Clinic Dr. Bita in Quebec and Ontario is a private clinic. As such, the services provided by our psychologists are not covered by the provincial health care system. However, extended health benefits through employers, such as EAPs (Employment Assistant Programs) and group insurances, offer certain coverages for the sessions. It is up to you to verify the amount and/or the number of the sessions that your insurance covers for psychological sessions. Usually, the psychologists bill you directly and you can claim the amount from your insurance. However, if you have been referred to one of our therapists or psychologists in through CSST, IVAC, SAAQ, or any EAP, your sessions are covered by these organizations for as many sessions as they authorize. For a detailed overview of our psychologists' specialties, please visit the Mental Health page or contact us for your first appointment with one of our psychologists.
