Anxiety Disorders

Most common anxiety disorders are grouped as:

Generalized Anxiety Disorder

Also called GAD, is constant feeling of worries and apprehension about minor matters in a person’s life such as an upcoming meeting, or planning for a party, or waiting fro spouse who is late more than 15 minutes. Individuals with GAD constantly fear the worst case scenario, and catastrophize. CBT is the method of choice for the treatment of GAD.

Agoraphobia

This is the fear of being in public places and if not treated the individual will not feel comfortable leaving the house. Agoraphobia is usually accompanied by panic attacks, as the fear is usually about having panic attacks in public.

Social Anxiety Disorder

Social anxiety is about the fear of being judged by others, or of ridiculing oneself in public without necessarily having a reason or a previous history. Exposure to social situations following a hierarchy of fear in conjunction with challenging anxiety provoking unrealistic thoughts using CBT are the methods of choice for the treatment of social anxiety.

Phobias

Phobias are specific intense fears causing the individual immense stress and dysfunction in different areas of life. Most common phobias are: fear of height, claustrophobia (fear of closed places), and fear of driving on bridges or highway. Similar to other anxiety disorders CBT and exposure therapy are the methods of choice for the treatment of phobias.

Panic disorder

Panic attack is a sudden rush of fear accompanied by highly uncomfortable physiological /physical reactions such as rapid and shallow breathing, muscle tension, dizziness and unrealistic cognitions and fears that worsen the panic attack. Panic disorder is the constant fear of having a panic attack. In brief, it is the fear of fear.

Separation anxiety

Commonly seen in young children, is usually indicative of an insecure attachment between the child and the caregiver, usually a parent. Therapeutic approach should be geared towards strengthening the parent-child bond. Play therapy or art therapy can help the child overcome anxiety and build self-confidence.

Anxiety disorders are characterized by excessive and unrealistic fears and worries.
